My take on V&A East's presentation
I recently had the opportunity to visit the inaugural exhibition at the new V&A East Museum in Stratford, titled The Music is Black: A British Story and it is well worth a visit for anyone passionate about music and cultural history.
The exhibition celebrates 125 years of Black music-making in Britain, spanning four continents and weaving together the threads between early pioneers and modern UK genres like grime and drill. It offers a vital, inspiring look at the deep-rooted impact Black music has made across so many genres we listen to today.
An Immersive Sound Experience
One of the standout aspects of the exhibition is its structure. Visitors navigate an immersive sound journey with over 120 tracks playing seamlessly through your headset as you walk through four distinct acts of cultural history.
Alongside the audio journey, the exhibition displays over 200 rare artifacts, including:
Historic instruments and original artwork
Archival film footage
Iconic stagewear from influential artists, including outfits worn by DJ Paulette and Skin
